Study: How to Understand and Help the Vaccine Doubters

A new article in Scientific America titled “How to Understand, and Help, the Vaccine Doubters” frames empathetic understanding of vaccine doubters as a new way to convince said doubters of the folly of their ways. It seeks to explain why parents who question such issues as school vaccine mandates, injection of myriad vaccine chemicals into children, and vaccine pushing by Big Pharma are not swayed by “facts countering these claims.”1

The authors—two epidemiologists and a professor of business ethics—point out that attempts at changing vaccine hesitancy into compliance have previously focused on “educational interventions, appeals to altruism, and statistics,” when the real issue may lay with individual values. They set out to see if people who question the wisdom of vaccines place greater emphasis on different values from those who accept the mainstream doctrine, and they determined that the answer is yes.1

A two-part study was conducted using a “Moral Foundations” questionnaire, a social psychology tool that evaluates how humans subconsciously use their attitudes towards principles like authority, care, fairness, liberty, loyalty, and purity to help them make decisions about what is right or wrong. Because people prioritize different values, the questionnaire highlights which ones are most influential in a person’s decision-making processes. 1

The first study included more than 1,000 parents evaluated for both vaccine attitudes and moral foundations. Results of that study showed that values were similar among all the parents except in the measure of “purity.” Comparing most hesitant to least hesitant parents, they also found a disparity in attitude toward “liberty.” The conclusion was that “hesitant parents are more likely to strongly emphasize values of purity and liberty, and less likely to strongly emphasize values of authority, than non-hesitant parents.”1

Suspecting that people with such leanings might be more susceptible to such “anti-vaccine claims as ‘Vaccines contain poisons/toxins/contaminants’ and ‘Vaccine mandates are excessive government control’,” the second part of the study looked at how the strength of vaccine beliefs—one way or the other—might compare specifically to those core values of purity and liberty. That study confirmed what they had found already, that the higher the score on importance of purity and liberty, the higher the belief in vaccine claims that spoke to those values, “even if the claims themselves are factually inaccurate.” 1

The authors admit that, “accurately identifying a phenomenon doesn’t automatically translate to successful interventions.” Still, their conclusion is that steering pro-vaccine messaging away from values like care/harm and fairness and instead focusing on values of purity and liberty might “provide a potential mechanism for vaccine attitude formation and change.”1

  1. would it be more kind to test all the vaccines required for infants, say, on politicians?
    And since they’re adults, they wouldn’t have to wait for a year or so, for standard schedule on all those goodies.

    I’m SURE Nancy “this wall is too tall” Pelosi & asso. would like to prove the vaccines are safe and effective, not merely profitable.

    THAT WOULD HELP A LOT, IN CONVINCING ‘doubters,’ ‘deniers’ & other scientists the folly of believing doctors, et al., NOT paid-off/detailed/captured by Big Pharma.

    1. Lol. I would love to see that. We’d have to make sure there was actually a vaccine in the syringe and not saline.

    2. I vote for this! Maybe I will be convinced once I see the vaccine pushers take their fair share in public being video taped with a third party doctor administering. I’d order popcorn for everyone.

  2. So how exactly do they plan on moving the focus of these conversations onto the values of purity and liberty while changing our minds? Everything I hate about vaccines is at total odds with purity values, and any mandiate/quotas/goals whatsoever is at total odds with liberty values. So although it sounds like they may have gotten somewhere, they didn’t. Good luck convincing me and others like me that certain vaccine ingredients aren’t toxic, have been proven safe, ok to inject into anyone’s muscle tissue let alone an infant, actually prevent disease, and don’t do harm. I’ve tried to convince myself but all evidence comes up half assed, incomplete, and unconvincing. While also somehow making us liberty value loving people believe being mandate compliant is somehow an exercise of our personal freedom. Can’t wait to hear it.

    1. They only need to convince EVERYONE that common adherence to authority is preferred to individual liberty. OR that your individual liberty only extends as far as agreeing with authority.

  3. To convince me, I suggest the following:

    1. I suggest that science be prevented refuting the dangers of aluminum adjuvants in the quantities given in multiple vaccinations.
    2. That the adverse reactions of vaccines are lower than the death rates from the diseases themselves in an unvaccinated environment.
    3. Studies that show that long term adverse reactions don’t occur.

  4. This is not about specific politicians. There are plenty of rightwing politicians who completely support big Pharma.

    My question is how did they get “anti-vax” subjects to fill out these forms in the first place? I am concerned that they were, once again, lied to or manipulated to gain information that will be used later to more successfully manipulate them.

  5. This study is aimed at making the propaganda of the medical system more effective, it is not aimed at helping anyone.

  7. What really does it for me, is just one issue:
    Why are ALL vaxxes made by FOR PROFIT companies?
    If vaxxes were ONLY NON-profit, *then* I might like ’em….
    All pro-vaxx propaganda is driven by $$$$….
    Thus, vaccines are a money-making *SCAM*….

  8. Once, just once, I would like to see someone do a similar study but just look at one variable…how much do people actually know about vaccines? Compare THAT between the “vaccine hesitant” and the “vaccine compliant”.

    We all know damn well what they would find. Maybe that’s why they won’t study it.

    1. Specifically quiz the doctors, nurses, and medical assistants whom administer it. I personally tested this, and nobody could answer the detailed questions about the scientific subject matter I learned at this website. That’s enough for me, they can’t answer the details, could not furnish the actual manufacturers insert slips, and simply work with 1 page safety summaries. If you want to get people better informed about vaccines, it starts with the medical educational sectors. Flyers, flyers, emails, flyers. If dealing with one on one pressure that’s simple too, “Show me the insert, let’s review this together.” (usually accompanied by) That’s not the insert, that’s a company summary page, I want the actual insert. They’ll almost always refuse to furnish it and that’s all you need to win the argument. If they do furnish the insert, scroll straight to the health risks dangers disclosure, read it aloud. In all probability, the administrator of the vaccine has not actually read that themselves, they’ll likely be as shocked as you are, having probably never read it yourself either. NVIC should acquire these, scan them, and post all the danger disclosures in one clever assimilation and article. Print that and take it with you to doctors offices, oh, you don’t have the insert, well luckily I have much of that data from the inserts right here, read this…

  9. The authors of that article used the word liberty freely, without having a clue what it really means. You can give me a shot, after my body goes cold, do what you want then. Until such time, give me liberty or give me death. Know your history, or be condemned to repeat it. The solution to modern day psychological trickery is rooted in historical fact, and faith. A long, but rewarding and necessary read every single American whom speaks of liberty should have read.

  10. Hello everyone, please listen to other sources, like your real doctor, the American medical association and research. Also there are REASONS we vaccinate- to have herd immunity, protect our vulnerable populations. You are putting yourselves and your children at risk by not vaccinating. It is your choice
