Polio Wasn’t Vanquished, It Was Redefined

Perhaps the most egregious example of clever sleight of hand (… not to mention the outright, blatant rewriting of history) on the part of public health officials in the United States occurred in 1954 when the U.S. government changed the diagnostic criteria for polio.1 It was the year that medical researcher and virologist Jonas Salk produced his inactivated injectable polio vaccine (IPV). The vaccine was licensed in 1955 and began to be used to inoculate millions of children against polio.

The Salk vaccine has been widely hailed as the vanquisher of polio, and it is commonly used as the shining example of how vaccines are the miracle drugs for combating infectious diseases… and now even against diseases that are not infectious. Pick any disease, illness or disorder you want. You got cancer, cholera, peanut allergies, stress, obesity… we’ll develop a vaccine for it.

What the apologists for the Salk vaccine regurgitate from a common script (… some might say scripture) is that before the vaccine was introduced and tested on one million children—the so-called “Polio Pioneers”—in 19542 more than 50,000 people in the U.S. were contracting polio each year, and that by the end of the 1950s the numbers were down to less than 10,000.3 Ergo, the Salk vaccine saved the U.S. from polio. Open and shut case.

Hmm, not so fast.

What is conveniently omitted from this heroic story is that the reason the number of polio cases in the U.S. dropped so precipitously following the mass introduction of the Salk vaccine in 1955 was not medical, but rather administrative. Yes it’s true, in 1952 there were 52,879 reported cases of polio in the U.S. And yes, in 1955 the number went down to 28,985, and by 1959 it had dropped to 8,425.3 But first of all, it’s important to note that the numbers were already declining significantly prior to the initial use of the Salk vaccine. In 1953, there were 35,592 cases of polio in the U.S.3 So there were other things going on in the U.S. at the time totally unrelated to the Salk vaccine.

More importantly, though, in 1954 the U.S. government simply redefined polio. Yes, the government can do that. It does this kind of stuff occasionally in order to help it meet its public policy objectives when it is unable to actually achieve them. How often have you heard of Congress playing smoke and mirrors, gimmicks with the national budget deficit, or on the issue of the unemployment rate? Exactly.

When it comes to government and public policy, the truth is seldom absolute. That’s just the nature of the beast.

According to Dr. Bernard Greenberg, head of the Department of Biostatistics of the University of North Carolina School of Public Health:

In order to qualify for classification as paralytic poliomyelitis, the patient had to exhibit paralytic symptoms for at least 60 days after the onset of the disease. Prior to 1954, the patient had to exhibit paralytic symptoms for only 24 hours. Laboratory confirmation and the presence of residual paralysis were not required. After 1954, residual paralysis was determined 10 to 20 days and again 50 to 70 days after the onset of the disease. This change in definition meant that in 1955 we started reporting a new disease, namely, paralytic poliomyelitis with a longer lasting paralysis.1

As I wrote in my piece “The Salk ‘Miracle’ Myth“…

Under the new definition of polio, thousands of cases which would have previously been counted as polio would no longer be counted as polio. The change in the definition laid the groundwork for creating the impression that the Salk vaccine was effective.4

So as radio broadcaster Paul Harvey used to say for decades at the close of each of his charming commentaries, “And now you know… the rest of the story.”

The FACTS are that there have been no cases of polio in the US and much of the world for many years. Without the vaccine, there would still be polio. The false narrative of this article is breathtaking. It goes against your narrative to acknowledge that vaccines actually work, and save millions of lives. Wow. The lack of scientific thinking is astounding. My mother had polio. I am exceedingly thankful that I did not have to fear getting polio and suffering the devastating consequences.

This makes no sense. Polio is nearly eradicated worldwide, with only 96 cases reported last year.

You claim that redefining it brought it down to 10,000 cases (in the US alone)
Clearly the vaccination *is* working, whatever you say about its other effects….

The polio vaccine doesn’t work?? How many people with polio have YOU personally encountered? Go back a generation or two and death and paralysis by polio were common. My grandma’s sister died of polio. Polio was redefined? Wait, a second, I’ve never met anyone that died of polio…oh yeah, cuz the vaccine works.

We should change the name or give a version number to a disease if the definition changes. Pre-1954 there was Polio Version 1.0, post 1954 we had Polio Version 2.0. This concept needs to be introduced to the CDC, WHO and NASA. Any graph showing statistics but not indicating a change in definitions is fraudulent.

I can’t help but think about the plague. In the 14th century this deadly disease killed half of the population in Europe in a few short years. My question is, why didn’t it kill the other half? There was nothing to stop it. Why did it stop? Did the other half get ‘vaccinated’?
It seems that the disease had simply run its course, only to reappear years later. Could it be that polio had also run its course in 1955?

More on SV40: it contaminated both the dangerous Salk vaccine & the still dangerous Sabin which replaced it.
“In the 1950’s, SV40 was one of several dozen viruses that contaminated the original Salk & Sabin polio viruses administered to millions of school children ..”. This from the 1947 Journal of the National Cancer Institute (a government organization). Quoted in Chapter 7, p.216 of “Dr Mary’s Monkey”.
Also see “The Virus & the Vaccine: The True Story of a Cancer Causing Monkey Virus, Contaminated Polio Vaccine, & Millions of Americans Exposed”, by Debbie Bookchin & John Schumacher.
By the way, this virus is now so widespread that it can be transmitted from person to person.

Good article, next you should write about how the polio vaccine was made from monkeys who carried Simian Virus 40, a known cancer causing virus, so vaccinating the world, they were also infecting everyone with a cancer causing virus (hence the HUGE climb in cancer rates 30 yrs later)

I know I had total paralytic polio as a child about 6 years old, which would have been 1953. I won’t go into the true miracle that kept me from an iron lung, but I can tell you it was a terrifying time for me and my parents! And now there are some people who had polio as a child and are,by ears later, having “rebound” polio. We just lost a dear friend to its affects. Whether the Salk vaccine was effective or not, how do you explain a disease, which took the lives of mostly children in the 1950s, eradicated? I certainly haven’t heard of any!

Now for the rest of the rest of the story… In 1997, the NIH admitted that the Salk live injectable vaccine was contaminated with the green monkey virus. Research also indicates that 70% of the cases were due to the Salk vaccine. Makes sense if the green monkey virus negatively impacts the immune system. Vaccine value has been based on false information time and again.
Most Americans have a compromised immune system. Fixing that issue would eliminate the need for most vaccines overnight.

As a mother with a Two year old who has been thus far unvaccinated, I am concerned about the hostile atmosphere surrounding this issue.
Also, since she will have to go to a day care school, I am concerned about vaccine shedding from the other attendees. It is my understanding that the live polio. vaccine is no longer given in the states but is still given in 3rd world countries. The one in the states is inactivated which should not shed.
It is a tricky topic. What can I say, but the more I research, the more apprehensions I have.

Stay strong Mothe! I too thought I would vaccinate my child at 2 years old but the more I read the more I didn’t want to. I didn’t want my child to become autistic. I still haven’t vaccinated and now my boy is nearly 9 years old. He is strong, rarely sick and is considered gifted because nothing has inhibited him. He has not been injected with unknown DNA-altering toxic serums that could mess up his mind and gut flora. People think he is 11 years old because of his intellect and height/size. He started school at 3 years old. It helps that we don’t eat toxic chemical food either. Find yourself a good naturopathic doctor and a homeopath to help you if your child does become sick. Find a school that will allow personal/religious exemption. If that day comes in my state that my child is not allowed in school, then I will pull him out. I will make life changes to be sure he is safe.

Excellent piece. Thank you for “exposing” the truth. Science and fact seem to have disappeared from modern man’s thought processes. So happy to see your article that reflects the government’s hoodwinking of the American public. I read this piece that supports your report and also claims that the polio vaccine was the CAUSE of most polio cases.

“When national immunization campaigns were initiated in the 1950s, the number of reported cases of polio following mass inoculations with the killed-virus vaccine was significantly greater than before mass inoculations, and may have more than doubled in the U.S. as a whole. For example, Vermont reported 15 cases of polio during the one-year report period ending August 30, 1954 (before mass inoculations), compared to 55 cases of polio during the one-year period ending August 30, 1955 (after mass inoculations)–  266% increase. Rhode Island reported 22 cases during the before inoculations period as compared to 122 cases during the after inoculations period — 454% increase. In New Hampshire the figures increased from 38 to 129; in Connecticut they rose from 144 to 276; and in Massachusetts they  swelled  from 273  to 2027 — whopping 642% increase.

Doctors and scientists on the staff of the National Institutes of Health during the 1950s were well aware that the Salk vaccine was causing polio. Some frankly stated that it was “worthless as a preventive and dangerous to take” They refused to vaccinate their own children. Health departments banned the inoculations. Even Salk himself was quoted as saying: “When you inoculate children with a polio vaccine you don’t sleep well for two or three weeks” But the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, and drug companies with large investments in the vaccine coerced the U.S. Public Health Service into falsely proclaiming the vaccine was safe  and  effective .

EV68D === Salk Type-1 IPV (Mahoney Strain) clever trickery..

As Chair of the Vaccine Injury Court Committee which investigated Salk Vaccine if caused paralysis outside the Cutter Incident, a few significant things were determined.

    The low points are –

First – The Francis Field Trials, CDC`s Gold Standard for vaccine trials, had the same reaction rate as did the Cutter incident – 2-3 times as many personal contacts of IPV recipients acquired polio from Salk IPV as did the recipients.

Cutter had 78 direct recipient case and over 200 family and community contacts and served as the basis for CDC to classify vaccine caused cases in family members of recipients as `Contact Cases`.

Second – EFFICACY in the Francis Field Trials was based on the fact that Vaccine recipients acquired polio at a rate 2-3 times lower than the placebo group…However, the Placebo group were classmates and close contacts of the recipients, sharing the same bathrooms and playing together at recess.

Third – Salk excluded the 100+ recipient polio cases arising within 14 days of vaccine administration in the Field Trial on his theory the polio had been acquired before receipt of IPV…

CDC records of the Cutter Incident shows that most of the Recipient Cutter Cases arose within 14 days of administration…but those records were not made public.

After Cutter a Pittman-Moore vaccine ignited a polio epidemic in Massachusetts in over 1,000 people…CDC prohibited release of the data under threat of criminal prosecution.

The only evidence of safety CDC put before Sen.Kennedy`s hearing re the vaccine injury table on IPV was the testimony of Salk…who stated his vaccine had no reactions in 450,000,000 doses of vaccine. In short CDC suborned perjury, as it knew differently…Massachusetts banned IPV for a brief period and CDC knew why.

The Result of the Committees Investigation…the committee members were personally attacked by Justice Department lawyers and monies due from other cases was held by HEW. One attorney was indicted and served time in Federal Prison for using funds already received while waiting for money HEW owed him. Disbarment proceedings were initiated against a second member of the Committee, and no victims were compensated.

In Italy, recently, there was a report of an Italian Cutter incident in 1959..

We just have a lousy compensation program for vaccine injuries and corrupt oversight.

The decline in polio cases in the US coincides with the introduction of indoor household plumbing. People had access to clean food and clean water. It’s smoke and mirrors, not the polio vaccine that they’re selling to us that is truly indicative of the decline in reported polio cases.

To tell you the truth, the article needs to be further improved, in two areas: 1) you need to give citations of the official US government definition of polio before and after 1954. Since you refer to the government policy and to specific years, it is an absolute must, and shouldn’t be too hard to do. Citing Dr. Bernard Greenberg is not enough, as he was not a government official.

    2) explain polio symptoms, and how the change in definition could have decreased the “polio” cases. What are other deceases named? (Dr. Humphries seems to have them listed in her book). Did they rise in numbers whilst “polio” decreased? Is it truly the same decease? Because right now in actually reads that the criteria for counting something as polio became more strict – which doesn’t necessarily mean is bad. Calling any paralysis as “polio” is also not fair or correct.

As Suzanne Humphries stated in “Dissolving Illusions”, many Polio like illnesses, such as Coxsackie and ECHO viruses, syphils, Arsenic, lead and DDT toxicity, transverse myelitis and Guillain Barre syndrome, hand foot and mouth disease were all reclassified as separate disorders, having previously been considered Polio. In addition, dietary factors may have played a role in polio prevalence. I believe the vaccination probably did contribute to the reduction in the incidence of polio in the Western Hemisphere, but the fact that the role has been overstated and distorted by the propagandists who wish to promote vaccination by spreading an unhealthy fear of non-vaccination is morally indefensible and weakens their argument immeasurably.

There is a lot of info online about how Polio was broken down into numerous diseases.

This is a quote from Suzanne Humpries:

“Prior to 1954, the following undoubtedly hid behind the name “poliomyelitis”: Transverse Myelitis, viral or “aseptic” meningitis, Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)- (what Franklin Delano Roosevelt had)[4], Chinese Paralytic syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, epidemic cholera, cholera morbus, spinal meningitis, spinal apoplexy, inhibitory palsy, intermittent fever, famine fever, worm fever, bilious remittent fever, ergotism, post-polio syndrome, acute flaccid paralysis(AFP).

Included under the umbrella term “Acute Flaccid Paralysis” are Poliomyelitis, Transverse Myelitis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, enteroviral encephalopathy, traumatic neuritis, Reye’s syndrome etc.

Before you believe that polio has been eradicated, have a look at this graph of AFP and Polio. If you are wondering why there is no data prior to 1996, go to the WHO website for AFP and you will see that there is no data prior to 1996, and note that AFP conitnues to rise in 2011. Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) is just another name for what would have been called polio in 1955, and is used to describe a sudden onset of paralysis. It is the most common sign of acute polio, and used for surveillance during polio outbreaks. AFP is also associated with a number of other pathogenic agents including enteroviruses, echoviruses, and adenoviruses, among others. But in 1955, there was no attempt to detect anything other than polio in cases of AFP. Once the vaccine was mass marketed, the game changed.”

    Excellent article, thanks.

People should know that at the height of the polio epidemic in the 1950s, Dr. Fred R. Klenner had cured 60 cases of polio using massive dosages of Vitamin C. It was administered either intra-muscularly, intra-veniosly, or, orally, depending on the situation. He published his work but it was/is ignored by the medical establishment.

No need for a polio vaccine, or any other vaccine, if using vitamin C. Vitamin C is cheaper, safer, more effective, and can be self administered orally and intra-muscularly. Unfortunately for the drug companies, Vitamin C cannot be patented and thus they (drug companies) cannot make any money off it.

Not only did Dr. Frederick Klenner cure cancer he showed how it destroyed the virus. Others did the same as he and published their results in the medical journals of the time. There are several studies written showing how Measles was treated with Vitamin A, an sometimes with the addition of D. Could it be these so-called childhood diseases are actually nutrient deficiencies? What the media NEVER says is how so many of the third-world diseases are related to malnutrition and very poor hygienic living conditions.

So many are fed poor foods (sodas, chips, pizza, wheat flour, dairy, etc.) that their constitutions are so weak they are susceptible to all kinds of diseases. As a health consultant I know and have found that large intake of several supplements make a huge difference. Since vitamin A is for the skin antibodies, yes it can help avoid measles, vitamin C great for the complexion and also found in large doses to destroy HIV/AIDS, and on and on. Changing diet, taking really outstanding supplements (i.e. Shaklee Corporation’s vitamins (company since 1915) have made a world of difference in my own health and those with whom I work. For more information about the polio vaccine, I recommend people read “Dr. Mary’s Monkey” by Edward T. Haslam, from TrineDay.com (the publisher). His father was a well known MD who was an associate of the researcher Dr. Mary Sherman, and he is a lay person who ended up doing much research on his own. It’s also his opinion that the polio vaccines were not only ineffective but 2 medical researchers at the time warned that they were contaminated with cancer causing monkey viruses, which was borne out in horrifying “experiments” and data he followed up on. He has an informed opinion about the origins of the polio epidemic, the cancer epidemic, and the AIDS epidemic, and much to say about top secret government coverups around the polio vaccine. I think every American should have this information.

I almost did not buy “Dr. Mary’s Monkey” because of the sub-title linking several of the characters and the assassination of JFK. However, I am grateful that I did because I could not put it down. The author, while there is some conjecturing, does supply valid references to show how the Simian 40 virus, originally found in polio vaccines, does, in fact, cause several forms of cancer – which begs the question, “Is the ever increasing cancer deaths due to the polio vaccines we got when we were children? Personally, I’ve no doubt. He does show how a few doctors realized this in the 1960’s and began trying to develop another vaccine to offset the Simian 40 virus – this is where Dr. Mary comes into the picture as the others, including Lee Harvey Oswald. Yep, that’s right.

For those interested in the so-called HIV virus, I recommend the March 19, 1992 Rolling Stone article, “The Origin of AIDS” by T. Curtis. It will send chills down your spine as did Dr. Mary’s Monkey for me.

I’m under the thinking diseases run their course, peaking and tapering once enough natural immunity is built up. But, were there other factors which can be cited? THANKS for a great piece – I will share!

Well, another slight of hand….. anyone in epidemiology knows that the natural course of a disease may be plotted on a graph and segmented into uprise, plateau and descent. THIS is the NATURAL course of EVERY disease.

Big Pharma’s game is to introduce ‘a’ vaccine at the plateau phase, then claim credit for it’s natural descending.

fun game, huh? all you need to do is hoodwink the public and condition into your greatness.

Sadly, vaccine makers have no incentive to change their ways. They make huge profits but are totally protected from lawsuits because Congress granted them immunity in 1986. Families are paying for the damages vaccines are causing. If you want to change this, please sign this petition

Protect kids, not drug makers! The law is corrupt and immoral.

Kindly pass this on to everyone you know. Together, hopefully, we can make a difference!

Great piece! I really enjoyed it. Concise, clear and factual with clear references. It would be great if your piece could be handed to every single person who asks the question “but what about polio?” in their attempt to prove that vaccines have been our savior.

I will certainly share it as far and wide as possible! Keep up the great work of exposing FACTS and SCIENCE in the face of this philosophical vaccine debate!

For more information on the real cause of Polio, go to harvoa.pub and read Jim Wests article on DDT and Polio.

What a breathtakingly dishonest article! I had a friend at school who had contracted polio and was lame. How many children do you see in calipers these days? Where are the huge hospital wards full of children in Iron Lungs? Yes, polio cases declined somewhat with better hygiene and sanitation but it was a world-wide scourge until vaccines were introduced.
Anti-vaccination fanatics will lie, twist statistics, hide facts and appeal to the lazy and gullible who don’t bother to spend 5 minutes looking for independent and neutral sources of information.

Read “Dissolving Illusions, the Forgotten History.” There is also a database with hundreds of peer-reviewed, published studies from PHD’s around the world with data against the effectiveness and safety of vaccines. I can give you that link if you’re interested. I have a BS in Engineering from an accredited University in the State of Washington and have spent a decade researching this issue. I know how to find and validate reputable information. I am neither dumb nor lazy. I am also the parent of a vaccine injured child. Maybe it’s time we all came to the table informed and had an honest and open discussion on the subject. All lives matter.

Facts? Science? Really? I have only one comment: Show me the studies. Show me the studies that prove that the Salk vaccine is ineffective. Did you ever consider supporting your arguments with evidence-based medicine instead of a fanatical, near-religious, voodoo science supported hatred of the boogey man vaccines?

I’ll be happy to show you the studies that support the efficacy of the Salk vaccine.

True, there are polarizing evidence for the effective nature of Salk’s polio vaccine. The one detriment for the vaccine was the contaminant SV40 (Samilian Virus 40)which was removed in the early 1980’s. This virus has repeatedly been present in autopsies of visceral cancers. Paralytic poliomyelitis is most prevalent in populations where lifestyle conditions are immune suppressant so there are a larger number of polio cases due to the vaccine. If we really want to eradicate disease from the world why not rid the fear with knowledge to say no to drugs: biological and petrochemical?

But IT WASN’T SAID the vaccine didn’t work, IT WAS SAID that it wasn’t the massive saviour that it was mooted to be. No one said that the vaccine didn’t do it’s job, they just the stats were redefined to make it look like it did a lot more healing than it actually did. Vaccines work, but some just like anything else in life do not work like they are supposed to, and some do more damage than good. Because someone says be prepared for big PHARMAS LIES doesn’t mean they are ANTI VAXERS.
